Took a couple of days off to hit the studio with my man C-TRU! What a crazy few days it has been this week, just after seeing Ryan Leslie on Monday, we had the Escherwyss Tuesdays in Zürich with Free entry for all, then C-Tru came in from Italy (The train was late as usual so he missed the connection in Milan) and we went to make beats.

I can’t stress enough how important it is to make beats from scratch with the artist as a producer. The whole production, song-writing and creative process is definitely the most important part of the chain of events which lead to creating the music.

I couldn’t believe how crazy the tracks came out, I mean, every single part of the beat was carefully selected and agreed upon during the entire process. A short film about that should follow in a few weeks. Also, as soon as we are done with the mixing, expect to hear more from C-TRU and Swissivory!

Saturday it’s another Club night at Vertigo, “Belle Soirée” for my readers living in Switzerland, do not miss out!

Until then.

Happy Valentine’s day.

I love my guests who come up and request a song at a party. Shows interest and that they’re enjoying the sound most of the time. But seriously, some people need to chill sometimes. Why do people love to force you to play a song? Do you really think that by asking me 20 times will make me play the song quicker? In the words of Borat: “NOT!”

Friday I was at Zürich’s Finest, packed crowd, maintime. Sometimes I just wonder why I pay so much attention to detail in my mixes, I am constantly searching for tracks that not only fit together but even make sense and sometimes have the use of the same lyrics, or melodies that match perfectly or blend into each other like warm honey… I go a long way into researching my mixes for the crowd to enjoy it to the fullest.

But damn people who go to the club probably don’t even realize it here in Switzerland because a)they don’t speak english and can’t understand the words and b) they just want to hear the same old tracks and if you don’t play them, then they consider you as a whack DJ. No sense of appreciation.

To those people, all I can say is “Fine by me”, if you know what I mean. I play for that 5% of the crowd who is actually paying attention to the DJ and who appreciate when a DJ goes out of his way to make the crowd enjoy an unforgettable experience, not just a human jukebox playing 15-year old DMX and Busta Rhymes tracks…

As for requests… I’m not going to play your song if it doesn’t fit into my playlist. Most of the time I will try my best to satisfy everyone, but I will do requests only if you ask it in a nice way (aka you’re not drunk falling all over the place) and if it fits into the programme.

I love when someone asks you to play trance or heavy metal at 11:30 during the warm-up session of an RnB/Hip Hop party. Or when you’re in the middle of playing at 132 bpm and some dude asks you to play “Crunk sound, you know, that real hip-hop”… Real What?

Honestly, if the song you’re requesting breaks the whole vibe and flow of the night just for you to feel better, then I have a few hundred other guests mad at me because of your stupid song. What do you want me to do? No offense, but let a DJ handle his business.

PEOPLE: PLEASE read the flyer of an event or club, or newspapers BEFORE you just go out to a club and expect Rave music at an 80’s night. And if you’re spontaneous and just wanna have fun, then open your heart and ears to music that you don’t usually listen to, and if you don’t like it after all that… well you can go home!

I’d really rather play for 250 people who came to have a good time than to play for 3 people who want to hear Marilyn Manson’s version of “Sweet Dreams” at a commercial Partytunes/Disco night. I’ll play “Sweet dreams”, but it will be the original version or the electro remix by Benassi if anything, not Marilyn’s chopped and screwed version!

So before you request a song, think about it before asking the DJ, it can be really annoying! LOL

Til Next Time.

Today I have to address the Leechers.

Leecher: “One that preys on or clings to another; a parasite”

This refers to those who pollute the music business. And sometimes I feel like I’m walking on a minefield which happens to be an old and forgotten big dump like those multinational companies who pollute third-world countries with acres and acres of wasteland.

Hopefully you get the picture by now. The music business is like any other industry. You have 3 types of people: talented, educated, and plain stupid.

There are some talented musicians, Dj’s, artists, promoters, etc… who just have the gift for music and make a successful career by using their talent. This could also be a talent for networking, or promotion…

Those who are educated are the ones I respect the most because they have gone to some sort of school, or learnt from experience how to handle business, how to treat people, and how to make good money out of their business. Very useful people to know.

Plain Stupid refers to the ones who think they know it all, whose ego are so large because they have the need to compensate for their lack of size elsewhere…

Whatever the combination you may have, chances are you have come across these types of people if you’ve been working in the music business for a long time.

When you enjoy success, it seems that you get less stupid people, but it becomes more and more difficult to distinguish them. Some are just taking advantage of your status, others have something to gain from you and want to profit from your success without paying for it.

Those are the leechers. And I’m done working with or for them.

New Year, 1st Month - Positive and Successful, the year has started great and that’s always a good sign.

Til next week.

So 2 weeks ago I couldn’t log onto my Facebook account anymore.

My account was apparently hacked and I had to start a new profile or simply stay off of it. But it’s really a necessary tool for my job, networking, and keeping in touch with my friends and family who live across different continents. I’m the ultimate Facebook user since I have useful reasons to be on Facebook.

My group “Last Night Swissivory Saved My Life” had 1000 members. I lost them all, and started a new one.

The support that I received after letting my network know about the “cyber-tragedy” was simply amazing.

Within 5 days I reached 500 members again, and the numbers just keep growing. It’s simply amazing that people actually DO care about your status updates and actually DO pay attention to everything that you’re doing. Will some promoters not book me as often because I lost 2000 friends on Facebook? Maybe. But those are the ones I don’t really want to work with anyway.

A nightmare turned out to be a blessing, because I had way too many unnecessary “friends” who were simply people watching my every move, waiting to celebrate at the first mistake or negative thing I’d say or do. So I had a chance to weed out the haters and start from scratch. So actually, thanks Facebook!

Until Next Week.

Just learnt this week from Supremus Sounds (my DJ booking agency) that our weekly residency at the 2B Lounge on Wednesdays has been interrupted “until further notice”. (Aka we’re done with those dudes.

Reason being, the owner is a 50-year old Turkish guy who thinks he knows all about the nightlife scene, but who really and truly knows nothing about Soulful music nor DJing, and wants to tell us how to do our job.

Anyway, we brought an average of 50 guests to his little bar every Wednesday, and a great atmosphere which offered people a great alternative with some Soulful music, not your average hit-list played all night long, but real classic funk, soul, RnB and old school classics.

Thanks to all our regulars who come and enjoy the night every Wednesday, it’s freezing right now anyway, so staying home during the week ain’t that bad either.

Oh well, we’ll find a new location for sure, no worries.

Keep you posted.

Until next time.

Not much, but that’s not bad for $ 0 budget, and only Facebook, Twitter and Myspace promotion in my spare time (I do have a day job and I DJ Full-time), considering that the single was/is available for free download to all via this very website

That means that 50 people love me or C-Tru so much that they’re willing to pay for good music. That means that I can make 25 USD if I release a single every 2 months… or at least as long as people like the music.

I love music. Damn I really live for music. I breathe, eat, sleep and shit music all day and night. If I’m not creating it, I’m playing it, if not I’m listening to it and singing/rapping along to a song. Somehow it is my way to expectorate all the stress from the daily routine and it makes me feel like I have a purpose in life. DJ’s can relate… Some people do drugs. Others buy cars, or shoes… My thing’s the music. Shoutout to my old college roommate Art, he knows what I’m talking about.

Back to topic: my next step is the dream of every DJ and producer, to live FROM their music. After 3 weeks into 2010 things ain’t looking bad, I’m booked every week til March as a DJ. Shoutouts to supremus sounds. Check out my management (shameless promo plug right here: http://www.supremussounds.com)

Til next week…

That’s the word that comes to my mind when I’m double booked.

I am the last person to say that I don’t like to be double booked and having my name on different flyers for the same night. For one it looks good, you’re being promoted twice as much in one night, and you make a name for yourself to 2 different crowds in one night.

But the matter of the fact is simple, double bookings can be a major pain in the neck for any DJ on the road. Hence the word “Double-edged sword”…

Having to run around carrying your equipment from one spot to another is like a marathon: you have to be ready for the night. Count in bad weather and a bad connection/wet roads… You get the picture…

Also, if the two events are close to one another you might end up pissing off the promoters, who see one another as the competition…

I hate double bookings personally, because very often I have to play similar tracks twice in a night, which can be really annoying, and most of all tiring.

But on another note, I don’t mind playing similar sets at two locations in one night, every now and then for twice the amount of pay, can’t complain. It’s just not always about the money, or is it?
