“It was all a dream”.
Visualize rocking crowds around the world to your own music, From LA to New York, from Jamaica to Africa, from Dubai to Tokyo. Imagine your records being played by DJ’s worldwide and getting heavy rotation on various radio stations around the globe. Better yet, picture having your own album physically available in record stores. The dream has now become an everyday reality for DJ Swissivory, producer and DJ based in Zurich, Switzerland, who recently released his self-produced album “Real Dreams”, featuring some of today’s most respected artists in the industry.
After peaking at #3 on US college radio rap charts with the first single “How We Roll” (a first for a DJ based in Switzerland), featuring none other than hip-hop legend Papoose, Swissivory eventually got signed as an artist and producer to the legendary R&B producer Ryan Leslie; his album “Real Dreams” landed on the Swiss Charts (#8 Hip-Hop album on iTunes Switzerland). His record with NORE broke the top 20 on Audiomack.com, and his music videos have gone viral. No wonder: with such a big co-sign like R-Les, and a list of featured artists such as No Malice (Clipse), Cory Gunz (YMCMB), Gunplay (Maybach Music), Cali Swag District, Blackstreet, SwizZz (Funk Volume), and many more, Swissivory achieved something that only very few DJ’s in his country have achieved.
A TEAM PLAYER
Unlike many DJ’s who would take advantage of being in such a great position, he’d rather provide up-and-coming artists with an opportunity to feature on songs with these huge artists, opening many doors to unsigned talents. “As a producer it’s essential to have references, but it’s equally, if not, more important to help the talents of tomorrow, that’s why I wanted an unsigned artist on the same track with a platinum-selling artist”. Always a team-player, this can also be seen is his sets, and also during his events, as he has given many of Switzerland’s DJ’s a guest appearance at his “PARTY HARD” event series over the years. Despite the recent success though, it was not always that easy for Swissivory. Sharing the studio with LL Cool J did not happen overnight.
HARD WORK PAYS OFF
Born and raised in the Ivory Coast, he then left his family and moved to Boston to complete his bachelor’s degree at Boston University. As a college student, he learned his trade as a DJ; After graduation, he returned to Switzerland to be closer to his mother. She survived a fatal accident in 2006, which tragically left her paralysed. Needless to say, this was a life-changing experience for him. In short, every time Swissivory settled in a new country/continent, he had to start from scratch and prove himself all over again. Not only was he challenged on a personal level when he moved to Zurich, he was also faced with language and cultural barriers: “I didn’t know anyone, I couldn’t even speak German at the time, although it’s still a challenge for me (laughs)”. However, the need to adapt to a new environment definitely played a big part in him becoming the versatile musician, producer and DJ that he is today. “People around the world relate through music, it’s the ‘universal language of Mankind’; yet a crowd in New York city is different from a crowd in Hong Kong or in Zurich. Having to adapt to the environment I was in at any given time, helped me not only become a better DJ but also a better person.” In the end, slowly but surely, his talent shone through.
#REALDREAMS The DJ
He has now become a resident DJ at Switzerland’s most famous club Kaufleuten, as well as his city’s top clubs; he also boasts residencies across Switzerland’s best locations, and he has played in virtually every venue the country has to offer, from the smallest bar to Zurich’s biggest arena, the Hallenstadion on New Year’s Eve in front of 12’000 people. He is also one of the few DJ’s to regularly play both in the German, French and Italian part of Switzerland. Swissivory DJ- ed at afterparties and concerts for artists such as Ciara, Bobby V, Ryan Leslie, Rihanna, Trey Songz, 50 Cent, Wiz Khalifa, M.O.P, T.O.K, Method Man & Redman, just to name a few. His skills as a DJ also brought him many residencies beyond his own borders, notably in France, Germany, and Austria. Not one to boast his name, it is still fair to say that Swissivory has paid his dues as a DJ and producer.
#REALDREAMS The Album
Swissivory is now promoting his album “Real Dreams”, fresh off his 2nd US and Jamaica tour in 2015, while working on various artists’ projects and DJing around the world, including Tariah, a singing talent in Switzerland, and C-Tru, his long-time collaborator from California. “If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that you should never let anything get in the way of your dreams. It took me a lot of effort, patience and time, but in the end, I went from dreaming about how my life could be, to truly living my dream. This is what my music is about: Real Dreams. My goal is to make people believe in themselves, and to inspire people around the world through music. If I can make it, then you definitely can achieve anything you put your mind to.”
